My own strange personal race to Oscar Night...
Sat. movie night Week #1
There Will Be Blood
Really unsettling score, freaky disturbing performance by Daniel Day-Lewis (and equally freaky and unsettling one by the guy in Little Miss Sunshine), interesting depiction of the evolution of wildcatting in the early 20th century. The end was just plain unfair to those of us sitting in the audience. Not cool, Daniel Plainview, not cool.
Sat. movie night Week #2
Atonement
I read the book and knew what would happen and it was STILL freaking sad. Also, Keira Knightley is really thin. Also, James McAvoy is adorable. Also, war is bad. Also, smoking is cool. And things don't always turn out well. The end.
Sun. movie night Week #3
No Country for Old Men
I highly approve of movies set in Texas that use Texas actors. Tommy Lee Jones (born San Saba, Tx) is dead on, as is Barry Corbin (his relative? in the wheelchair near the end.) Holy shit, Javier Bardem's character kept me awake all night. The audience was so stunned at the end, half of them laughed and the rest stared slack-jawed at the screen. (I was a nervous giggler, myself.) Apparently the movie is faithful to the McCarthy novel, which I've never read. Dude. I'm still digesting that one.
Yeah, so in conclusion, I'm glad I'm done with the Best Picture nominees (I already saw Juno and I'm just not going to get to Michael Clayton, sorry George) because I just don't think my psyche can take much more. Art is so freaking harsh, man.

You are so brave! I just refuse to go suffer to the movies, and won't get myself to go see either Country for Old Men (I need to sleep at night), or There will be blood. I might go see Michael Clayton, just to say I saw three out of five, plus it's George! Mmmm ; )
