Moonstruck Moment

I just heard Annie Lennox singing Why from the other room (I think Bree had to resign herself to watching the AMAs tonight; life is tough without cable), and have been immediately transported back to September, 1996. Although the song came out a few years earlier, it was on a mix tape given to me then - the month after I got back from a summer in Oxford after I graduated from college. Since that tape was subsequently on non-stop rotation in my Mazda 626 for the next six months, I always remember the song from that time. That tape was such a masterpiece that it's still a punch in the gut to listen to it. How's that for a Miss Havisham* moment? Good lord.

Wasn't I going to tell you something interesting? Umm, yes! Awesomeness this week included book club brunch with Brooklyn friends last weekend, pre-Thanksgiving meal with Harlem friends tonight, a trip to the Met on Thursday as a chaperone for a school I work with, a night out in Williamsburg with same Brooklyn friends on Friday, AND my first trip to the opera!
It was kind of like this:

but without Cher. And we saw Madame Butterfly, not La Boheme. I wish I could do justice in words to how visually stunning the production was, so much so that I almost didn't notice it was three and a half hours long! I think I'll go ahead and be pretentious enough to like opera. If I can score more student tickets, I'm definitely going again.

The days, they keep hurtling onward and I can't keep up. I've got serious work to do between now and three and a half weeks from now, when I head to Texas for a couple of weeks: finish up a project and paper for a class, FINISH MY PROPOSAL, remain employed, and forge onward with the preemptive holiday dieting. Three weeks, five pounds, no project done and counting...

Next time I'll tell you the very entertaining story of a past fling that as of last week just won't stay flung. As a preview, let me quote you the text message I received from him after SIX MONTHS of absolutely no contact. Oh, it helps for you to know that this was sent at 3am. And I quote, "Are you naked?"

Yep. And you wonder why I'm single. It's shocking - especially when there are so many awesome guys out there. I just don't seem to hear from any of them. Maybe it's time to start wondering whose fault THAT is.

Umm, nah.

* Yeah, let's be honest. I only pulled that out because I just watched the Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow version of Great Expectations this weekend. Let me remind you again - it's slim pickings without the cable.
